In ECI 509, Special Problems in Curriculum and Instruction,
I worked one on one with a struggling reader for one hour after school. I used the assessments I learned in ECI 543
and ECI 544 to get a baseline of where the child's needs lay. Then I used the next 10 sessions, twice a
week, to work with the child on specific strategies I learned in ECI 543 and
544 to advance his reading capabilities.
For five of those sessions, I was observed and was given feedback on
ways to improve my lessons. This class
provided me hands on experience to put all of the reading strategies I have
been learning into action and to see how it feels to provide direct instruction
to help a struggling reader. At the end of my 10 sessions, I met with his parents to show
them what we have been working on and give them recommendations I had. This class showed me first-hand what it was
like to be a Reading Clinician and help a struggling reader.
