Throughout my educational journey in NC State's k-12 reading
program I have not only learned many ways I can help struggling readers become
more proficient, but I also learned what it means to be a teacher leader. In ECI 508, Teachers as Leaders, it brought
to light for me the process in becoming a teacher leader. When I first began this program I considered
myself a shy person. I really was not comfortable
with the idea of leading or teaching my colleagues. I had to do an assignment in this class where
I interviewed a teacher leader, I interviewed my principal. After hearing her
story about how she gradually and comfortably became a leader over time, I
knew it was possible for me too. Being a
teacher leader is a natural process that happens through experience and expertise. It is not something scary but is something
all teachers are capable of.
Summary of My Results-
I have learned that there are many ways to help a struggling reader become more successful. There is new technology being invented all of the time. Technology resources are great tools to bring into the classroom to help the student be more involved in their work. When a struggling reader is able to call something their “own” it gives them a sense of pride and a drive to want to make it the best they can. Animoto and Voicethread are just two of the many choices to choose from. I have also learned how to administer many different assessments to get a baseline of where a struggling student’s areas of weakness fall. I can now assess a struggling reader’s fluency, comprehension and writing and be able to give them specific instruction to help bridge their reading gap. Some of the most important things I learned were through all my hands on experience working with children. I now know what it involves to give a child individualized, direct instruction for an hour to bring up their specific literacy skills. It has been a dream of mine to help struggling readers feel more confident and succeed and now I can say I know how!
